The Piece Hall, within the heart of Halifax West Yorkshire, is home to independent retailers, restaurants and a whole lotta history! There is no place like The Piece Hall, a recently refurbished building created in the 1700's to trade textiles and cloth with other merchants. The northern attraction has since become a 'cultural phenomenon'' and tourist magnet within Calderdale welcoming an amazing five million visitors since 2017. Since the refurbishment and reopening, The Piece Hall has flourished into a treasured feature within Halifax Town Centre where the local community and those further afield can seek a little piece of Yorkshire history. With the likes of Shibden Hall and Eureka just moments away from The Piece Hall, the small town has become a bustling, vibrant place to visit.
The businesses within The Piece Hall has something for everybody. From bakeries, gifting and clothing to arts, crafts and more, there is nothing that can not be found within the four tall walls. You can meet and greet with the local business owners and even take part in workshops and weekend activities. To learn all about the retailers within the 'treasured trove'' click here for all business links and where to find them online. In the summer months you can often find Chow Down, a food and drinks festival providing street food, craft beers and music in the courtyard of The Piece Hall. Chow Down uses local businesses to feature within the festival which runs over Bank Holiday weekends catering for all ages, dietary needs and vegan/veggie options.
One independent that launched their businesses in the reopening of The Piece Hall is Halifax's very own Gin Lane. Gin Lane, a premium gin bar and retailer, offers a friendly gin experience for all to enjoy with other spirits and soft drinks available. With Gin Lane also having a retail unit connected to the bar, you can try, test and enjoy all the gins on offer and then grab yourself a bottle as a souvenir. With Gin Lanes favourite gin expert Darren present to advise you on all selected gins on offer, you can join their regular 'Gin Experience' for an evening of gin tasting, light bites and all round fun. Another business within The Piece Hall is well known luxury brand The Yorkshire Soap Company. The soap business started in 2004 as a chef put his culinary experts to use by creating wonderful soap scents with cake moulds. Now with eight stores within Yorkshire, you can take away artisan soaps and beauty products at an affordable price. The Piece Hall's Yorkshire Soap Company creates a lot of footfall with their seasonal displays around Christmas capturing the attention of tourists and more.
Since May 2018, The Piece Hall has annually hosted a stage of the Tour de Yorkshire as it passes through the villages of Yorkshires picturesque rolling hills. In May 2019, we saw the event as a fun and lively day for supporters and tourists with
the excitement of cyclists setting off to complete their challenging journey. The Piece Hall held activities and entertainment within the courtyard bringing the businesses and visitors together for a day of Yorkshire celebrations! Around surrounding areas of Halifax you can often see yellow bunting and decorative bikes around the town to show encouragements to cyclists entering Halifax.
In 2019 The Piece Hall hosted what was to be a spectacular music festival weekend headlined by Elbow and Embrace and hosting lots of other bands and musicians, to relive or see what went on please visit our post about the world-class weekend of music and sunshine here
As Christmas creeps closer, why not head into The Piece Hall this year to support the independents when planning festive social events, shopping and more. The Piece Hall at Christmas is a truly magical experience with decorative displays, events and a wonderful Christmas tree in the heart of the festivities. Last year, we experienced several weeks of Christmas Fairs, Stalls and the Alpine Tipi. The Alpine Tipi offers a cosy fire pit within the centre as a place to stay warm with a mulled wine or hot chocolate with the option of traditional winter warming food and music. With food, drink and gifting at the centre of the Christmas celebrations, last year we saw The Piece Hall busier than ever with tourists coming to enjoy the final celebrations with a Courtyard Party to see in the New Year. This year, with more small businesses within The Piece Hall, it is an exciting time for both visitors and retailers.
