Traffic chaos on the M62 as flipped car hit by van causes 11 miles of tailbacks and two hour delays

An overturned car on the M62 westbound has caused traffic chaos for motorists this afternoon.

The car, which overturned on the carriageway between J22 A672 (Rishworth Moor) and J21 A6193 Sir Isaac Newton Way (Milnrow), was hit by a van and is causing hours of delays for drivers.

There is currently more than 11 miles of queueing traffic as far as J24 (Ainley Top) and the westbound entry slip road has also been closed to help with traffic management.

Emergency services are on the scene, including officers from North West Motorway Police and paramedics from North West Ambulance Service.

At its worst, the incident was causing two hours and 20 minutes ofdelays but travel time is now down to one hour and 50 minutes, with motorists advised to allow plenty of extra time for their journey.

A spokesperson for Highways England said: “There are severe delays of over an hour and a half on the M62 westbound in Greater Manchester due to a collision involving a van and an overturned car which has closed 2 lanes (of 3) between J22 (Saddleworth) and J21 (Milnrow).

“Emergency services including North West Motorway Police Group and the North West Ambulance Service are in attendance. Highways England Traffic Officers are also providing assistance with traffic management on scene. Recovery is ongoing. National Highways contractors will also be carrying out emergency repairs to the central reservation which was damaged as a result of the collision.

“Please allow extra time for your journey if you’re travelling in the area this afternoon as there is over 11 miles of queueing traffic approaching the incident, with traffic back to J24 near Huddersfield.”

Motorists stuck in the queues have been seen exiting their vehicles, as they remain stranded on the carriageway with no sign of movement.
