A Halifax woman quit her job due to stress and fatigue brought on by a ‘horrendous’ humming noise that goes on all day and night.
Yvonne Conner, 50, of Holmfield, Halifa x, left her part-time role working with homeless people earlier this year and is at the end of her tether due to the mystery noise.
The hum has been plaguing her and other residents for around 18 months now and they have yet to be told the source of the noise.
The hum can be heard in Halifax and as far away as Queensbury, it is claimed.
Yvonne says Calderdale Council has been investigating the hum since last year but she’s still waiting to be updated on what, if anything, the local authority has discovered.
Environmental health officers have visited her house on several occasions where they took readings and went away.
“They told me there could be two or three different sources. I think there are two sources – I hear a noise that goes on Monday to Friday and a different noise that runs all weekend.”
She says the humming leaves her with a ‘heavy feeling’ at the front of her head. Her partner Mark has been suffering from mystery headaches, she says.
The constant noise has left her feeling shattered and stressed.
She feels lucky if she manages to get five hours’ sleep.
“In April I couldn’t function at work because of stress. I was getting three hours’ sleep. I handed in my notice because I could not cope. I quit my job.”
She added: “I was crying all the time at work. I was breaking down in tears with the pressure.”
She now works as a dog walker – but the humming continues.
Yvonne is considering moving house to get away from the humming. She claimed that one or two other locals had already moved out because of it.
YorkshireLive understands that Calderdale Council is continuing to investigate the source of the noise or noises.
The council has been approached for comment.
An online petition to the council – titled ‘Stop the Holmfield Hum’ – has now been signed by 400 people.
One woman who signed the petition wrote: “The noise is intolerable.”
Another petitioner said: “Absolutely sick of not being able to sleep for the constant humming.”
One woman posted: “At its loudest, it feels like the walls are pulsating! Come on Calderdale Council fight for the rights of your residents.”
