Police statement after child hit by car outside Halifax primary school

A road outside a Halifax primary school has been cordoned off by police after a child was hit by a car.

Emergency crews were called to Stainland Road, Greetland, at 8.44am on Thursday, November, 21 after reports of a collision near West Vale Primary School. West Yorkshire Police said they were alerted to a crash involving a car and a pedestrian on the street. It is understood that the pedestrian is a child.

Inquiries are still ongoing but it is believed that the child fell into the road before being hit by an oncoming vehicle. Following the incident police have confirmed that the minor has been taken to hospital via air ambulance with serious injuries.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called to Stainland Road, Greetland, at 8:44am to reports of a collision near West Vale Primary School. Initial enquiries suggest a pedestrian has fallen into the road and been involved in a collision with a vehicle. They have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.”

Meanwhile, an eyewitness said the street was cordoned off and officers were talking to locals in the area. Mum, Jemma Abigail, told Yorkshire Live: “I was walking my son to school down Rochdale Road and saw all the lights at the bottom by the traffic lights.

“As soon as I got closer more police arrived as well as the air ambulance, a police officer stopped us from going further. I was really shocked.”

Police have not revealed any further information on the crash or the age of the pedestrian struck by the vehicle at this time.
