At around 3.25pm on Market Street, a police officer and a PCSO were both injured while making an arrest. A man who witnessed this stepped in and managed to restrain the suspect while the officers arrested him.

The police officer suffered facial injuries during the arrested and required hospital treatment, with the PCSO suffering an injury to the wrist. A 39-year-old Halifax man remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of assaulting emergency workers.

Superintendent Allan Raw of Calderdale Police said: “I wish to pay my personal thanks to the member of the public who showed great public spirit in intervening to assist our officers in Halifax yesterday.

“He left before we could get his details at the scene, but I would urge him to make contact with us so we can thank him in person.

“Assaults on all blue light emergency workers are treated extremely seriously and we are fully investigating the circumstances of what took place.”
