Officer suspended after ‘chill out or I’ll choke you out’ video

A police officer has been suspended from West Yorkshire Police after footage emerged appearing to show him restraining a man and saying “chill out or I’ll choke you out”.

The viral video shows an officer wrestling a man to the ground in Halifax before holding him with an arm around the neck on Sunday August 16.

West Yorkshire Police say that the officer has been suspended and a misconduct investigation is under way into his actions.

A man’s voice can be heard on the video shouting ‘chill out or I’ll choke you out’ and ‘chill out or you’re going to sleep’.

The arrest happened in Spring Hall Gardens on Sunday, August 16.

Police said the man was being arrested in relation to assault offences.

Osman Khan, temporary assistant chief constable, said: “We are aware of a video circulating showing the arrest of a man at Spring Hall Gardens, Halifax on Sunday, August 16, in relation to assault offences.

“We immediately reviewed the footage and looked into it as a matter of urgency to establish the full circumstances.

“We have reviewed the actions of the officers involved and a referral has been made to the Force’s Professional Standards Directorate.

“Our investigation remains ongoing and we have made a voluntary referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).

“The officer involved has been removed from frontline operational duties.”

He said the arrested man had been released under investigation.
