Neighbours plead with drivers to stop rubber-necking at exploded house

An angry Illingworth resident has pleaded with motorists to stop driving by the house that was destroyed in an explosion yesterday morning.

A family narrowly escaped with their lives when a deafening explosion ignited a massive fire at their end-terrace home on Green Lane.

The fire service was called at 7.38am but a few hours later the entire house had burnt down, leaving a heap of charred wreckage.

Now it seems some people can’t resist a nosey at the dramatic scene – and residents are getting annoyed by the increased traffic on surrounding roads.

Alison Hodgetts posted on Facebook: “Can I just ask that people please stop driving down Green Lane!

“Most people surely know that the road is closed as you can clearly see from Illingworth Road or Pavement Lane.

“It’s not some sort of spectacle for you to come and have a good old nosey at! I’ve never seen as many cars on Greenway…. Ever.”

Jemma Louise replied: “Well said Alison. I’m at West Scausby Park and have never seen Green Lane as busy. I wonder how they would feel if the shoe was on the other foot and people were coming to have a good old nosey at their misfortune, like it’s some bloody tourist attraction!”

Investigators have not yet determined what triggered the explosion but they have not ruled out a gas leak as the cause.
