A 72-year-old pedestrian has tragically died at the scene of a crash after being struck by a heavy goods vehicle.
The crash in Broad Street, Halifax was first reported at around 11.48am this morning (February 18). Witnesses described the “massive presence” of emergency services, with the street blocked by police cordons as multiple police vehicles and ambulances attended the scene.
Now, West Yorkshire Police have confirmed a 72-year-old male pedestrian was hit by a DAF articulated heavy goods vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 59-year-old man has since been arrested for causing death by dangerous driving.
A police spokesman said: “Police are appealing for witnesses and footage following a fatal collision in Halifax.
“It happened at about 10.29am today (Wednesday) when a DAF articulated heavy goods vehicle was in collision with a pedestrian in Broad Street, close to the crossroads junction with Orange Street.
“Officers attended and the pedestrian, a 72-year-old man, was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.
“Following enquiries, a 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remains in custody at this time.
“The collision is being investigated by the Major Collision Enquiry Team, who are urging anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them on 101, or by using the livechat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website.
“Anyone with footage which may assist the investigation is also asked to get in touch, quoting log 418 of 18 February.”
