She was left with horrific, life-changing injuries
A woman was left with life-changing injuries after a selfish uninsured BMW driver ploughed into her parked car during a police chase.
Ahjay Hussain, 31, of Halifax, smashed into the parked up Toyota Yaris the woman was driving, leaving her with a catalogue of injuries including a bleed on the brain, fractures to her spine, a partially collapsed lung, rib fractures and a deep wound to her thigh. The “hit and run” driver then fled the scene – but not before leaving his DNA in blood-staining on an airbag.
Bradford Crown Court heard on Friday, October 3 that a West Yorkshire Police patrol first spotted Hussain, of Freeman Road, Southowram, driving at excessive speed in Moor End Road, Pellon, in February. Prosecutor Jessica Lister said when the officers activated their blue lights and sirens, Hussain ran a red light and drove at speed over the brow of a hill.
Seconds later the police officers came across the “horrific” carnage he had left after the crash. Drone footage played to the court showed the aftermath of the crash, including extensive damage to both vehicles and debris scattered across the road.
Hussain was eventually arrested two months after the collision when officers spotted him behind the wheel of an Audi.
In a victim impact statement the court heard the woman, who was in court to see Hussain face justice, had to be treated for an MRSA infection and had suffered PTSD and other issues including hypersensitivity and constant headaches. She had been unable to drive and it was not known if she would ever be able to return to work.
Barrister Nicola Hoskins, for Hussain, said her client had expressed remorse and had told her that the complainant didn’t deserve what had happened to her.
Recorder Patrick Palmer it would take significant time for the woman to recover, if ever, and her statement showed the very significant psychological effects. He said if Hussain, who admitted a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, had gone to trial he would be going to prison for four years.
But his early guilty plea meant his sentence was reduced to 32 months and he would have to serve up to half in prison. He jailed Hussain for two years and eight months, and he was also banned from driving for three years and four months and ordered to take an extended re-test.
