Dad of missing Essex girl who ‘went to Halifax’ speaks on safe return

The father of a missing 14-year-old school girl from Essex, who left a heartbreaking note saying she was “going to Halifax”, has thanked the public for their help in her safe return.

Olivia Smith left her home in Harwich, Essex, on Tuesday morning, saying she needed to ‘sort herself out’ after a breakup with her boyfriend.

But last night she was found safe and well close to her home in Essex.

Her dad, Michael Slater, 51, said: “She’s back home now. She’s safe and sound.

“The police took her back to her mum last night at about 6pm or 6.30pm.

“I knew she’d not gone up North, she didn’t have the money and it’s like 200 miles up there. She would have been seen at stations.”

Michael added: “I want to thank everyone who supported us and kept their eyes open and all the papers. Basically, I want to thank everyone that’s been involved.”

A spokesperson for Essex Police told Essex Live : “We are no longer looking for Olivia Smith, 14, also known as Slater, who was missing from Harwich.

“She was found yesterday, Thursday 7 January.”
