Council reveals more about strange humming noise keeping people awake

Environmental Health officers at Calderdale Council are trying to get to the bottom of a strange humming sound which has been keeping residents awake at night.

The local authority has received several complaints from fed-up residents about noise in the Holmfield area of the town.

Residents told YorkshireLive that the humming noise was driving them mad and causing sleep loss.

One woman described the humming as ‘horrendous’.

She is now taking sleeping pills and is struggling to focus while at work.

People as far away as Queensbury – about four miles from Halifax – say they are being disturbed by the humming noise.

Today a spokesman for the council said officers were in contact with a business in the Holmfield area. The council did not name the company involved.

Councillor Scott Patient, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Resilience, said: “Complaints about noise are assessed by the Council and where appropriate we will take action to try to resolve the issue.

“Our Environment Health team is currently investigating complaints from residents of North Halifax about noise in the Holmfield area.

“Officers are in contact with the complainants and with a business in the area to understand the problem and assess options.”
